NHV Hattery in Castle Gardens Arcen
Pop-up workshop
At the castle, you will find ‘the Hat Workshop’ in the North Wing from 10 May until Pentecost, 9 June. This is a temporary millinery studio that we will set up opposite the exhibition space in the same North Wing. The staffing of the studio will be filled by you, our members.
We are very happy that Castle Gardens Arcen is giving us the space to showcase millinery techniques to the public alongside the exhibition of the 2025 competition hats with the theme ‘Mad Hatter’s Wonderland’.
What are we going to do?
Most members of the Dutch Hat Society make hats themselves. We are almost certain that each of you is regularly asked how a hat is made. With this pop-up studio, we can show the general public what is involved in hat making, without having to open our own home or studio to strangers.
In addition, this offers an opportunity to meet other members, work with them or learn from each other. You might also be able to give explanations or comments on the competition hats to visitors to the exhibition. Ideally, we would like to have two milliners present at each session. That would be much more sociable too!
Our first idea is to open the Hattery on weekends on Saturday and Sunday and Ascension Day, with the Friday after. We will close on Whit Monday. If there is a lot of enthusiasm, we can extend this.
What is available?
We will ensure that some basic materials are available as well as finishing materials. There will also be some hat blocks and tools waiting for you. You may use everything, but it must be left at the Hattery. Of course, you are also welcome to bring your own projects, materials and tools.
What are the conditions?
Your contribution is voluntary and we would like you to think of yourself in the Hattery as an ambassador of the association. You are therefore registering as a volunteer, but that does not mean that your registration is without obligation. Once you have signed up, we are also counting on you to be available to visitors in the North Wing of the Castle for a number of hours that day.
The studio will be opened at 11:00. Until then, you have time to visit the Castle Gardens. From 11:00-17:00 the studio space will be manned by you. Kasteeltuinen Arcen will provide coffee/tea and a light lunch.
How can you apply?
You can register via this form. We then schedule everyone and of course coordinate this with you. Every week we pass on the participants to Kasteeltuinen Arcen so that at the entrance it is known who is coming. We would like to know the following from you when you register:
- Are you coming alone and would like to be matched with another member?
- Or do you already have a companion/fellow member in mind?
- Which day would you like to come? Please include an alternative date in case your chosen date has already been reserved.
Who can participate?
Members of the Dutch Hat Association can apply. If there is space, guests may also be invited. However, they are expected to be active in the workshop or as guides for visitors to the exhibition.
